The Granny-Day is here and the street-exhibition starts in Malmö during the festival. We have recieved pictures of Grannies and Granny-stries from people all over the world, the US, France, Italy, Irac, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, you name it!
There are wonderful, sad, encouraging, beautiful stories about grannies who lived through wars, fought, danced, smiled, cried, planted forests, lived with violent husbands, were unavailable, cooked food, raised kids, were hard to like, were mysterious, kind and who loved, and we love them back by this celebration! Read the stories at grannyday.com
After Malmö the exhibiton will continue to Serbia, Germany and Spain, and if you want to host a street-exhibition in your town, give us a call at facebook!
There is also an auction going on right now, Sofia Hagelin, owner of Lovikka has donated a wool-cap and mittens, and the money from the auction will help us finance Granniverse! So take part in the auction!
The granny-exhibition will remain open, so if you haven’t told you granny-story yet, you are most welcome to do this at the Granny-event!
With love,
The Granny-team

This year we celebrate it for the first time, through an online and street exhibition, created by people from all over the world! We are collecting stories and pictures of grannies, that will become part of the exhibition which will start in Malmö on Granny Day, during the Malmö Festival, and then go on a tour around the world! :)

A few days ago, 17 people gathered next to a forest, a lake and some houses. The universe of Granny’s Dancing on The Table has expanded a lot since we started about one year ago with the script for the movie, and now it includes development of a game, granny-day and Eini’s forest, and will soon include live and online exhibitions and events. More people has joined us in the group, Art director, Composer, Sound designer, Animator, and so on. We needed to find the core of Granniverse and make sure everyone heads towards the same direction.
We worked together in groups to figure out the main themes of the project and to understand the different parts and what’s holding those parts together. One group discovered the philosophy of the crack, and this philosophy actually embraces many different parts of the universe. This philosophy will definitely be very present in the project!
We also talked about interaction, how to find the best way for us to interact with you, how to be transparent with our work, how to open the creative doors, etc. We also talked about Creative Commons, how to finance a project and still be able to release it with CC? This is big question, yet unsolved. And what does it mean for the creators in the project to release with CC?
And there also was some time to relax and to have fun!
A sunny afternoon in June a group of eight people gathered to tell the story of older relatives through scrap-booking. Several of the participants had brought pictures and materials to use, while others came unprepared – but everyone found a story to tell.
First, everyone drew a picture that would describe them to themselves if they’d lost their memory.
After that, Hanna introduced the Granniverse, and the participants did a short interview with each other…
…before it was time to hit the pictures, glue and scissors!
In the end everyone showed their scrap-booking pages to the group and told the stories behind them. That was a powerful moment with many profound stories.
The scrap-booking pages turned out beautiful!
A big thanks to all who participated, and to those who weren’t there: Hope to see you next time!

Today visitors at the library had the change to borrow one of us from the Granny team. It was a nice opportunity to meet curious people who wanted to know more about the project or game design and film making in general.
We also invited visitors to play the small reality game we had designed during our stay at the library. The first clue was a letter…
We were 7 females in different ages, playing together at the library. To start with we talked about the themes of transformation, earthquakes, identity, sexuality and origin, and associated freely. Then the scrapbooking started, and everyone went deeply into their own memories and lives.
Hope to see you at our next open workshop!

Today in Granny’s Library we had the first manuscript workshop and it was open for anyone.
At 16:00 the workshop opened and Hanna started explaining the Granny Universe to everyone.
After explaining the Granny Universe for everyone the discussions around the story, characters and their interactions started.
Some of what was discussed was the interaction with the city, the things that goes on there and how the world is percieved through Eini’s eyes. With this mindset there was also a thought about Eini’s mother being like an earthquake, a human earthquake, in her actions. Some possible scenarios that could also arise here would be what would happen if Eini walks into a deparement store, how would Eini act? As you might have gathered, Eini is quite special in her interactions with other people. This made us wonder kind of situation would Eini find herself in if she would try to mimic the wrong kind of person in the departement store? For example trying to mimic the cashier instead of a customer. Taking it further, what if she were to imitate a foreigner or a coloured in some kind of way that could be percieved as offensive? What if Eini where to see an animal in a leash, would she hunt it or free it?
Moving away from the problematic scenarios that could arise the discussion took a turn towards how Eini actually gets to the city and why. Is there something at home that triggers this? Is it the father? A newspaper clipping of sorts? Further how will the people that interact with Eini change? Will they change and if so, is it solely because of Eini? When Eini moves in the citry how does she navigate? How does she handle pedestrian crossings, cars and vehicles in general?
The interaction with religion, popular culture, advertisement and modern society was also discussed to some degree.
Another topic was how the movie should lead to the opera performance. Is it a specific date that the performance will be held and that’s the main reason or is there some other reason that draws Eini there?
Last but not least, what is it that makes Eini turn back? Is it because she’s disappointed, ecstatic or because she want’s vengeance against her father, perhaps it’s more an issue of Eini having a need to be “approved”? It could perhaps also simply be because it’s an unfinished chapter.
There were of course also discussions on the Granny’s facebook page that had carried their own weight. A memorable quote on the subject of the different fans’ first memories:
“Remember when I was about 3 or 4 and my father was showing off making pancakes. He flipped them in the air higher and higher, finally making one stick to the ceiling, much to me and my brothers joy.”
We had a great time today and we hope to have another great one tomorrow during the focus-group for Granny’s Dancing on the Table! For more info on that check here (information in swedish).
Today we are building our open office in the middle of the second floor at the library in Malmö.
Today’s missions: Start building Granny’s Library. Bring your suggestions to the facebook-page: http://www.facebook.com/grannysdancing. Themes: Identity, origins, sexuality, to live in your own body, control, power and to break isolation.
There will also be a box for questions, where you can add yourself to the story world, and tonight there will be a screening of Nasty Old People, the movie.
See you!
With love,
Granny and the team
